The Max Planck Institute for Human De­ velopment, which was founded in 1963, is dedicated to the study of human development and educational processes across the lifespan and historical time. Before outlining some of our findings, I will briefly describe the design and scope of this program. The Berlin Aging Study (BASE: Baltes & Mayer, 1999; Our Institute, located in Nijmegen, is one of more than 80 research institutes that form part of the German Max Planck Society, and it is one of the few outside Germany. The Institute is entirely devoted to psycholinguistics – the study of how we produce and understand language, and how we acquire these skills as first or second language learners. Research at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences revolves around human cognitive abilities and cerebral processes, with a focus on the neural basis of brain functions like language, emotions and human social behaviour, music and action. The International Max Planck Research School on the Life Course (LIFE) is a joint international PhD Program of the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, the Freie Universität Berlin, the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, the University of Michigan, the University of Virginia, and the University of Zurich.
